Optoma’s latest projector was created with gamers and movie enthusiasts in mind, allowing 3D projection in HD, XGA and SVGA resolutions. Design Connections include HDMI, VGA-In, S-Video, Composite Video, Stereo Audio-In and RS232. The projector is designed in such a way that it can be used for either front or rear projection, and can be mounted on the ceiling or placed on a tabletop. Inside, it includes a 2-watt speaker, and purchase comes with a remote, interconnect cables and other accessories. The system accepts video inputs for HDTV, EDTV, SDTV, NTSC, PAL and SECAM. The Optoma HD66 is compatible with NVIDIA’s 3D Vision Technology for the 3-dimensional effects. The technology involves the use of a computer with a new NVIDIA GeForce video card meant for 3D. Combined with an image refreshing rate of 120Hz, HD66 is able to display alternating stereoscopic images to the left and right eyes at 60Hz rate each. When users wear 3D polarized eyeglasses, it synchronizes with the projector and users may enjoy smooth looking transitions. Purchase includes a remote control with batteries, lens cap, an AC power cord, composite cable, multi-lingual CD-ROM User’s manual, quick start card and an Optoma warranty card. For security purposes, there is also a Kensington lock port, a security bar and a keypad lock. ** While 3D projector is an interesting technology, users need to remember that a 3D source, 3D content and 3D glasses are required for viewing. Purchase does not come with a 3D glasses, hence users need to get active shutter glasses like NVidia’s 3D Vision goggles. Setting up and calibrating the Optoma HD66 The user manual is a good guide for the physical setup of the projector. There are clear illustrations. Instead of pure black and white manuals, there are color indications along with descriptions. The operating menu is great with 23 language support. It has a simple, user friendly interface that makes navigations easy. The users’ manual explains each segment clearly and there should be no problem with the configuration if users follow the manual well. 3D is supported at 1280 x 720 resolutions at best, and the 3D Sync. Invert function can only be used when 3D is enabled. The 3D Sync. Invert is meant to correct the problem when users discover the inversion of the image depth. Optoma also has a safety configuration in which the projector cannot be turned on if the lamp cover has not been placed back on the projector. There is also an auto shut down function to avoid overheating, and users may turn it on again after it cooled. In fact, when the lamp fails, the system will not turn on at all until the lamp is replaced.
Features The projector is also capable of projecting bright images with 2500 ANSI lumens, and comes with high contrast ratio of 4,000:1. The rapid power-on and shutdown helps users save time and money. Meanwhile, the projector also boasts of showing off 3D images for high intensity gaming, up to 720p. It is compatible with both PC and Mac computers, supporting computer resolution as high as 1920 x 1080p. Performance Image is both bright and clear and the 3D effects are great when users view it through active-shutter glasses. The minimum image size is 23” and maximum is 300”. Users may prefer to use an external speaker than to use the integrated 2-watt speaker for better audio enjoyment. Perhaps the best use of this projector is for gaming. It lacks many qualities that truly qualify it as part of a home theater for movies, but with its 1080p computer resolution support, it will be good enough to keep gamers happy for hours, though of course users need to be aware of the heat and the lamp. One may be frustrated if the projector suddenly turns itself off with the automatic detection to avoid overheating in the middle of a battle with some aliens. Pros and Cons The RS232 support means that the machine can be controlled by using other remotes, which helps the user minimize remote control clutters. Conclusion |

Fantastic colors! The black is really engulfing, yet shadow details do not disappear into the darkness. That’s really amazing!
We’re really happy with the Optoma HD66, bought it for our new home with one of the rooms converted solely for home theater. Very impressive.
It’s not really the best there is, I’ve seen better, but good enough. There are some color distortions with a reddish-yellowish background. Skin color is not natural… it’s totally off and I spent an hour fine-tuning it. Doesn’t matter what mode I used, it’s the same. Yucky!
It needs some serious calibration, but after that, it’s great. Agree that the skin tone was off, but after calibration it was really beautiful. No complains and live happy ever after.
The native resolution is actually 1280 x 800, which means a 16:10 rather than a 16:9 with 1280×720… not nice. it makes the picture darker than what it’s supposed to be if I force it to a 16:9.
It worked very well for my PS3 and 360. I like the details that give me a great advantage over my opponents.
The Cinema mode is simply perfect. My room is a total darkness as the curtains are really heavy. My sweet spot is a 10 for sharpness, 3 up from the default of 7.
It’s not really an inky black, but just good enough. Are there some exaggerations in some of the comments in here? I can only agree on the shadow details, that one’s really good.
It doesn’t have an auto focus. Mom likes to shift it around the table when she wipes it, and each time I had to refocus. I thought I’d just mount it up so that there’s no need for refocusing, but she’s not agreeing to it at all.
Got its good and bad… tho I’d say that the good is more than the bad.
I’m glad I bought this. My setup is at the basement, and I didn’t have a screen, painted the walls white though, and worked just fine. The picture is really beautiful, and yes, the games can be really marvelous! I didn’t mount it, but then again nobody really moves my stuff in the basement either. So I don’t have the problem about the refocusing. Or maybe I’m just lucky, even the setup is so easy for me
So far, I have no complains about it. Have not tested out the 3D function yet (well, we watched Avatar in the cinema). But I heard that Nvidia isn’t supporting it. Color is very good, bright enough and still give great blacks and shadow details. Agree with others that the calibration needs to be done all over because the default settings look really ugly. So far, the “Brilliant Color” stays down because it looks better that way, while keeping the brightness at standard. My complain is the remote control, but I guess it just needs some getting used to.
I read several reviews before settling for this projector. Great, I must say, and pictures are really sharp. I like to watch HD with a projector and this one does perform very well. There is no problem, except when hubby would tell about the rainbow effects as he observes our son play games with it.
I’m happy with it so far. Hubby tried hard to convince me about the purchase and while I was a bit skeptical when he got it home, but I’m okay once he set it up and showed me what it can do.
I loved our older projector, but it was already getting quite old, and started making some noise. Now it sits in our garage, and our children are tearing it apart as my daughter starts learning about projection technology for her science class at school.
Our 2 sons love their sister to bits, and opened up the old projector for her.
Anyway, the color looks perfect after calibration, and hubby did the calibration with tips he got from the web. Not bad at all.
I got this from my sister, she bought it with a carrying case, but she gave it to me without it because she’s using the case for something else. But that’s just a small matter, there’s nothing to complain about. I’m not going to make this portable anyway, so the case is basically useless to me.
What I like most is that the set-up was very easy. Even though all the calibrations need to be adjusted, it was easy to do so. We set the lights to standard based on some advise we read from the net. Picture is fantastic, we love the projector very much. Blacks are strong with good shadow details.
Color is rich and it also scaled the 1080p movies pretty well. I’d give it 5 stars if you ask me.
